PART ONE: DRAWING UP A WISHLIST

BOUNDARIES

Fences

Fences establish the boundaries of your property and give you privacy if you need it. They can also give you shelter from prevailing winds. Think about what height you want your fence to be. Are you the type of person who likes to lean over the fence and talk to their neighbours or do you want complete privacy so you can sunbathe and entertain in peace? Your fence can either fade into the background in favour of the plants and other features or you can choose from the many decorative fence panels available today and make it a feature in itself.

Hedges

Hedges are the best choice for a boundary but, if you have a new property, it can take a while to establish a hedge. You will also need to spend some time maintaining it. If you have a dog, a hedge may not be thick enough to prevent your dog from escaping.

Walls

Walled gardens can create a micro-climate where more tender plants will grow but they are an expensive option for a boundary. If you have a sloping site, you may need retaining walls to create level areas in the garden. Walls won't necessarily be effective as a windbreak. In fact, they can make the situation worse.

Interior boundaries

You can split up your garden into separate 'rooms' with interior boundaries of hedges, walls or fencing. Trellis fencing is a good choice for this. Dividing your garden can often make it appear bigger.
