Human Spring Watch

High end garden design company, Artscape has launched a human behaviour survey, inspired by the BBC’s current Springwatch project that monitors animal behaviour during the change of season. The Artscape Human Springwatch Survey encourages participants to monitor their own changes in behaviour and mood over the next few weeks of spring.

By focussing people’s attention on the amount of time they spend outside, Artscape hopes to promote the numerous health benefits for people all ages that are associated with being outdoors, including:

♥ increased mood boosting serotonin that helps overcome depression
♥ reduction in heart problems (we are less likely to suffer from heart attacks in summer)
♥ less likelihood of osteoarthritis; lower stress and tension
♥ the reduction in the likelihood of bowel cancer
♥ relief from dementia such as Alzheimer’s disease
♥ improved educational and social development for children.

Spring marks a distinct change in the way people increase the amount of time they spend outdoors. This is noticeable by a return to gardening, hanging washing, eating and drinking outside, visiting local parks, sitting outside at bars and restaurants, playing outdoor games and so on. Human Springwatch offers participants a downloadable journal for them to monitor the length of time they spend carrying out these activities, the time of day, and the way in which it makes them feel.
