Gardening Scotland 2009

Gardening Scotland, the national gardening and outdoor living show, celebrates its 10th anniversary this year and over the course of a decade it has earned a reputation for providing inspiration to visitors on how to make the most of their outdoor space.

With what has to be one of the best named of the show gardens, Border College's 'Credit Munch Garden' is to be an edible garden created using recycled materials. It will demonstrate how you can reduce your food bill and recycle the waste from your garden. By using the freecycle website they are aiming to obtain the materials they require in exchange for tips and advice.

On a similar theme we have the intriguingly- named 'Little Black Number Beats the Crunch' an urban garden with wide variety of textiles, form scent and colour offering year round value with a difference and low maintenance costs thrown in.

SAC Ayr's 'Go Wild' garden also looks promising. They are taking the Wild theme one stage further and have designed a garden where the owners can literally ‘go wild’. The garden features a circular chat pit area, which leads to a traditional wood-fired soaking tub, once out of the tub, the owners can relax and keep warm next to the open fire, and take a drink from the built-in drinks cooler.

In the Big Back Garden, The Earthy Green Garden gives novices and well-seasoned gardeners alike great ideas for creating their own green space. Featured particpants include recycled furniture makers; organic gardeners; green composters; Fairlie Organic Growers with their trio of beautiful raised beds full of organic veg; and even advice and help from experts for those adventurous enough to want to keep their own laying hens.

The Pallet Garden Contest is one of the most popular attractions at Gardening Scotland. Here gardening clubs and schools from across Scotland compete for the prize for the best garden in a space no bigger than one square metre. The competition is organised by the Scottish Gardeners' Forum and one of the main aims is to encourage and foster the future generations of young gardeners as well as make the weekend a fun and memorable experience for all.

For the first time ever at Gardening Scotland, new gardens will be created right in front of visitors’ eyes. On Friday, 29 May, the Show will play host to the Scottish heat of the WorldSkills UK Landscape Gardening Competition. The competition, managed by the British Association of Landscape Industries on behalf of UK Skills and funded by the Scottish Government, will involve teams of landscapers competing against the clock, and each other, to create a garden designed by multi award winning designer, Andy Sturgeon.

Nurseries and plant growers will be exhibiting in the floral marquee and you'll be overwhelmed by the choice of gardening products on sale at the trade stands.

Gardening Scotland runs from 29th - 31st May and you can find out more about the show at the Gardening Scotland website.
